Spiral Freezers
Some food products can be as hot as 230°C when they come of an oven, they then need to be cooled down to -25°C. This is a large amount of sensible heat that needs to be removed. This heat also has to be removed fast to prevent bacteria from being able to grow. Ther best solution for this application is a spiral freezer. When the food product comes out of the end of the spiral freezer, it is ready to be packed and shipped.

Ammonia Refrigeration Cold Stores
The fan coils in our coils in cold stores absorb heat from the store which has ingressed through he thermal insulation and also from the food product which is entering the store. Repeated opening and closing of the doors from personnel entering and leaving with the product also adds heat load to the store. This heat load calculation was worked out when the plant was installed.

Permit to Work in Ammonia Refrigeration
On arrival he filled in the necessary paperwork regarding infectious diseases and signed the permit to work. Our site contact showed him to the spiral freezer which had the issue.
Ammonia Liquid Pump Failure
One of two ammonia liquid pumps had thrown the breaker in the electrical panel. On inspection with his multimeter, our engineer found that the electrical windings had blown to earth.
N+1 Controls Switch Over
As the ammonia liquid pump is critical to the operation of the plant, a redundant system is available. The control panel automatically switches over to the redundant pump.
Remove and Replace Pump Motor
The power supply was isolated, locked off and tagged out according to the procedure set out in our Method Statement. The mechanical part of the pump was then valved off. The shaft coupling was unbolted from the electrical motor. The electric motor was then replaced with stock from the onsite stores and the electrical connections were re-made with new connectors.
Re-instatement of Ammonia Refrigeration
The valves were then opened and a leak test was carried out. The cam switch on the control panel was switched over to start the new pump motor and the electrical readings were logged on the commissioning sheet.
Customer Satisfaction
After the job was signed off, the customer wated to talk to our engineer about the technical side of the job. He asked about the frequency of electrical testing. Our engineer explained to him that all wiring is tightened on each maintenance visit and the amps taken of the various components. Where the amps are higher than expected, further tests are carried out to help prevent failures occurring during production.
